Walter C. Goldstein of Westhampton Beach died of natural causes on July 24 at his home. He was 85.
Born in Montreal, Canada, he moved to Brooklyn at the age of 12. A proud graduate of Penn State University with a degree in civil engineering, he served as an Air Force bombardier navigator during World War II.
He was the founder and president of Underhill Industries Inc., one of the largest concrete construction companies in New York. With its joint venture partner, DIC Construction Corporation, Underhill completed the concrete structures for many of the largest developments in New York City, including the World Trade Center, Coop City, Starrett City Housing and numerous other projects.
In 1972, Mr. Goldstein initiated the purchase of Certified Industries, a supplier of transit mix concrete, from U.S. Steel. Certified Industries became one of the largest suppliers of concrete in New York City.
The family recalled this week that Mr. Goldstein loved food, friends, France, his boats and life. He was known for a good story and a great sense of humor, they added, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
In addition to his wife, Doris Goldstein, he is survived by three children, Laurie, Steven and Bruce; two stepdaughters, Carol and Marjorie; and nine grandchildren. A brother, Emmanuel Goldstein, predeceased him.
Funeral services were held on July 29 at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in New York City. In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
