It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ward Bennett Spellman on Christmas morning, December 25th, 2023, at the age of 62, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Ward spent his entire life in the Hamptons. Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, and raised in the picturesque town of Hampton Bays, his roots in the community ran deep, having attended Sacred Hearts Grammar School in Southampton and later graduating from Mercy High School in Riverhead. The Hamptons held a special place in Ward’s heart, and he lived a life that reflected his love for the area.
For two decades, Ward called Westhampton his home, creating a life filled with memories surrounded by the beauty of the East End. He dedicated his professional life to Spellmans Marine, the family business, where he worked tirelessly, contributing to its success and building lasting connections within the local maritime community. He spent much of his free time on the water as well, going on countless fishing trips and leisurely boating excursions with many of his favorite people.
Ward was a family man through and through, a loving husband, father, brother, and uncle to many. His love for being on the water was rivaled only by his love for the people closest to him. Ward’s loyalty and devotion to his family and friends were unparalleled, and this has quickly emerged as one of the richest parts of his legacy as people have begun to revisit their countless happy memories with him.
Ward was a person who made everyone feel important, heard, and loved. His genuine and compassionate nature left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him. Whether navigating the waters or navigating life’s challenges, Ward faced every situation with resilience and a positive spirit.
He is survived by his wife, Danielle; his daughter, Fallon Spellman; his seven siblings, Buddy Spellman (Kathy), Dennis Spellman (Monine), Kent Spellman (Suzanne), Susan Decker (Billy), Stacie Booth (Warren), Ernest Spellman (Kim), and Tara Governale (Peter); as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. His passing is preceded by his parents, Bud and Winifred Spellman, and his niece, Katie Spellman. He leaves behind a strong legacy of love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
In honor of Ward’s memory, a memorial service is being planned, with details on arrangements to follow. The family appreciates all support and condolences during this difficult time.
There will be a Christian Mass at St. Rosalie’s in Hampton Bays on Wednesday, January 10th at 10:30 am.
Ward Bennett Spellman will be dearly missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share in the joy of his company. May he rest in eternal peace.
