Wayne Johnson
Wayne Johnson Jr. of Southampton died on October 20 at his home. He was 88.
Born July 11, 1922, in New York City to Gladys (née Royer) and Wayne Johnson, he attended Buckley School and graduated from St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. He went on to Harvard and in 1943 attended Yale as a Marine through the V-12 Officers Training Program.
A naturally talented and highly competitive athlete, he played varsity football for both Harvard and Yale and is, to this day, the only man in Ivy League history to receive a letter in the same sport from both universities. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Harvard in 1944 and a law degree from Harvard Law in 1948. Mr. Johnson continued to stay active with St. Paul’s School and Harvard throughout his life and adored the camaraderie of his classmates.
In 1952 he married Mary “Polly” Goodrich at St. Andrew’s Dune Church in Southampton. He started his distinguished career in law at Putney, Twombly, Hall & Skidmore in New York City. In 1953, he joined Owens Corning Fiber Glass as corporate counsel for the Pacific Coast Division, Sales Promotion and Controller, Construction Materials Division. In 1970 he joined Stillman & Maynard Investment Advisors in New York City. H.G. Wellington acquired Stillman and Maynard in 1986; Mr. Johnson was a noted analyst and broker at the firm until he retired in 2002.
After moving with Owens Corning Fiber Glass to California and Ohio, Mr. Johnson and his wife lived in Greenwich, Connecticut. An avid sportsman, he was a member of the Field Club of Greenwich, the Bathing Corporation of Southampton, the Meadow Club of Southampton and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Johnson Clark of Rye, Lorry Johnson Prentis of New York City and Polly Johnson Neely of California; a son, Wayne Johnson III of Georgia; and six granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 30, at noon, at St. Andrew’s Dune Church in Southampton. In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, New York 11978-7048 would be appreciated by the family.
