The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton boys swim team defeated Sayville/Bayport-Blue Point, 91-72, on December 15 to improve its League II record to 1-1, 3-2 overall. Last week’s meet was originally scheduled at the Bonacker’s home pool at the East Hampton YMCA RECenter, but due to mechanical and structural issues there, the meet was moved to Sayville. East Hampton head coach Craig Brierley was hoping to have his swimmers back at the Y at some point this week.
The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton 4x400-meter relay team of Bridgehampton’s Leslie Samuel, Pierson’s Meredith Spolarich and East Hampton’s Melina Sarlo and Ryleigh O’Donnell set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing in 4:24.34, which placed them second at their crossover meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday. That time topped the 2016 record by 10 seconds set previously by Devon Brown, Ana Toledo, Elexa Berti and Elizabeth Bistrian. What made the new record even more impressive was the fact that Samuel was tripped up by another runner starting the second lap, according to head coach Yani Cuesta. To her credit, Samuel got back up and continued to run. Samuel also won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 4 ½ inches and she placed second in the 55-meter dash in 7.85 seconds. O’Donnell placed second in the 1,000-meter race in a personal best 3:16.98 and East Hampton’s Dylan Cashin (11:33.07) and Pierson’s Sara O’Brien (11:54.37) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter race.
The Bonackers topped Deer Park, 63-12, at home on December 14 in their League IV season opener, then lost, 44-15, at Smithtown West on Friday. Luke Castillo (138 pounds), Cooper Ceva (145), Adam Beckwith (160), Richie Maio (220) and Francesco Palombino (285) all won their matches via pin, while Austin “Bronco” Campsey (102) won his match by technical fall and Jose Calderon (172) won his match by major decision.
The Bridgehampton boys basketball team defeated host Ross, 70-46, on Monday night to improve to 3-0 in League V play, 3-3 overall. Alex Davis finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the win, while Savion Ward tallied 10 points, nine assists and six steals. Mikhail Feaster finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Southampton wrestler Hudson Fox placed second at 152 pounds at the Rick Herrmann Memorial Tournament at Bellport High School on Saturday. He had pinned his previous two opponents before reaching the finals in 1:22 and 56 seconds, respectively.
Hampton Bays junior Emma Halsey broke two school indoor track records at a crossover meet on December 11 at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. Halsey set a new triple jump record with a leap of 31 feet 2 inches, breaking the previous record of 30 feet 9 inches set in 2018. She also finished the 55-meter hurdles in 9.73 seconds, besting the previous school record of 9.94 seconds that was set in 2005.
After suffering its first loss of the season, 48-43, at home to Stony Brook in a nonleague game on December 15, the Hampton Bays boys basketball team responded with an 80-61 victory over Miller Place at home on Monday evening, which improved them to 2-0 in League IV play, 7-1 overall. Kazmin Pensa-Johnson led the offensive charge for the Baymen in Monday’s victory with 37 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Patrick Donahue scored 21 points, Isaiah Lattanzio added 15 and James Powers chipped in with seven points, seven steals and five assists.
After defeating Comsewogue, 53-41, at home on Monday, the Hurricanes are 3-0 in League IV play following 47-44 and 33-25 victories over Sayville and Rocky Point, respectively, last week. Jasmine Taylor had 13 points, six steals and five rebounds against Comsewogue while Sarah Gormley and Sandra Clarke each chipped in 13 points. Shannon Sweet grabbed 10 rebounds and sunk a free throw with 36 seconds left to give the ’Canes a 45-44 lead in the win over Sayville.
The Westhampton Beach wrestling team defeated Eastport-South Manor, 45-28, at home on December 14 then won, 41-30, at Comsewogue on Friday and are off to a 2-0 start in League V matches. Sal Fracapane (172 pounds) and Bobby Stabile (132) each won both of their matches last week by pin, while Bruno Maffei (160) pinned his ESM opponent and won his Comsewogue match by technical fall.
