Bonac Boys Swimming
Drops Opener
The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton boys swim team lost its season opener, 85-61, at home at the East Hampton RECenter to perennial powerhouse Half Hollow Hills/Kings Park on November 28. Pierson junior Jack Ziemer was named “Swimmer of the Meet” by team captains. In his first swim, Ziemer went a best time in the 200 free, then a best time in the 50 free of the 4x50 freestyle relay, then he had to race in the very next event and went another best time in the 100 back. Ziemer finished up the meet with another short rest and swam a leg of the 4x100 free relay. Liam Knight swam qualifying times for the Section XI Championships in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley.
Southampton Wrestling
Competes at Northport Duals
Southampton wrestling head coach Lester Ware said the Northport Duals that his team competed in this past weekend was the toughest event he’s taken his team to since the 2015 Eastern States Classic. There were a number of highly-ranked Division programs and wrestlers who competed. Hudson Fox led the way for the Marines going 4-1 on the day. Ware said his team should be welcoming back Hudson’s older brother, Cole Fox, back to the team at some point next week. Ware said Jack Nastri and Jackson Garcia wrestled well at Northport. Even though numbers are good with 27 wrestlers, it still doesn’t have anyone to fill 101 or 108 pounds.
Hurricane Wrestlers
Place Second in Manhasset
The Westhampton Beach wrestling team had a strong outing in its first competition of the season, taking second at the Manhasset Invitational on Saturday out of 11 teams. The Hurricanes finished with 221 points, behind host and champion Manhasset (226.5), and ahead of Poly Prep (154 points).
Two Hurricane wrestlers were champions on the day, with Bobby Stabile taking the title at 145 pounds, while Carmine Esposito was champion at 160, beating his own teammate, Andrew Lewis, in the final at that weight class. Darren Cangelosi (108) and Dylan Razzano (152) also finished second, while Dylan Blenk (101), Nate Cangelosi (108) and Connor Rodgers (190) finished third. Nicholas Hochhauser (124) and Calvin Henke (131) finished fourth in their weight classes.
Lily Blenk, one of two female wrestlers for Westhampton Beach, went to the Copiague Invitational on Saturday, an all-female tournament. She was champion in the 120-pound weight class, in a 6-4 decision, and her opponent in the final finished third in the girls state tournament last year. She was named the “Queen of the Mat” for the tournament.
First-year head coach Jakob Restrepo said he was happy with the way all the Hurricane wrestlers performed over the weekend.
“My sole expectation was for everyone to compete,” he said. “I was really just looking for effort at a high, competitive level throughout the day, and they did just that. They really answered the call.”
The Hurricanes will be back on the mats on December 9 at nearby Hampton Bays High School for the Doc Fallot Duals, and will visit Comsewogue to open the League V season on December 15, starting at 6 p.m.
Hayes Finishes
Cross Country Season
Westhampton Beach senior Trevor Hayes raced to a third-place finish in the Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships in Huntsville, Alabama, on Sunday. He finished the 5K John Hunt Cross Country Running Course in 16:29, which earned him the bronze medal to cap off his final cross country race of his high school career.
Baymen Wrestling Competes
At Sprig Gardner
Mike Gutierrez placed fourth at 285 pounds at the 45th annual Sprig Gardner Tournament at East Hampton on Saturday. Although they didn’t place, Hampton Bays head coach Mike Lloyd said Raul Lopez (152 pounds) wrestled well going 3-1 on the day, as did Jaime and John DePalma, who went 3-1 and 2-2 at 131 and 116 pounds, respectively. Due to time constraints, there were a few wrestleback rounds that didn’t take place, therefore limiting a few wrestlers from placing, Lloyd said, “but, as a whole, it was a good first look and decent amount of mat time for a lot of very new wrestlers.”
