The win avenged a 63-42 loss at Mattituck earlier this season for the Whalers (11-3 in League V, 11-6 overall), who bounced back quickly after their 59-41 loss at Babylon two days prior.
The Pierson/Bridgehampton girls basketball team is still searching for one more victory to clinch a postseason berth after losing, 29-28, at Babylon on January 23, and then lost, 47-40, undefeated League V leader Port Jefferson on January 26. Sofia DeSa hit the winning three-pointer with 4.8 seconds left to lead Babylon to victory after Coco Lohmiller had hit a go-ahead floater with 13 seconds left. The Whalers need to win at Shelter Island this Friday or at Smithtown Christian on Monday to wrap up a playoff spot.
The Southampton girls basketball team defeated Greenport/Southold, 32-25, on Monday and now need to win one of its final two games to clinch a Suffolk County Class B postseason berth. The Mariners (6-6 in League V, 8-10 overall) played at Mattituck on Wednesday, and finish the regular season at Babylon on Tuesday, February 7, at 4:30 p.m. Daelyn Palmore scored 22 points in the win over Greenport, while Juliette Archer blocked eight shots and grabbed 12 rebounds and scored four points.
The Southampton boys basketball team took care of a shorthanded Pierson team, 85-36, at home on Monday, solidifying their stature at the top of the League V standings with a sparkling 9-0 record in league play (13-4 overall). Tyson Reddick went off for 27 points, all on three-pointers, while Derek Reed scored 19 points and facilitated the offense well with 12 assists. Kyle Seltzer had 13 points for Pierson (11-7, 11-4).
Southampton wrestling’s Cole Fox placed second at the Paul DiIorio Memorial Tournament at Sachem East on Saturday. Fox won his consolation final at 160 by forfeit over Sachem East’s Azariah DeLaCruz.
The Hampton Bays boys basketball team outscored host Shoreham-Wading River, 21-6, in the fourth quarter to erase what was a 10-point lead and win, 54-46, on Thursday, January 26. Kazmin Pensa-Johnson scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Baymen (8-3 in League IV, 13-4 overall). Patrick Donahue added 11 points and Gianni Scotto scored 10 points.
After suffering its first League IV loss of the season, 63-21, at Shoreham-Wading River on January 24, the Westhampton Beach girls basketball team responded by winning its next two games. After defeating host Rocky Point, 45-32, on January 26, the Hurricanes defeated Sayville, 51-36, in what was their first home game in 10 days on Monday. Sandra Clarke led the offense in both victories with 21 against Sayville and 15 against Rocky Point. Shannon Sweet added 10 points and Kylah Avery grabbed 11 rebounds in the win over Sayville, while Jasmine Taylor had six points and 11 rebounds and Kate Sweet chipped in 14 points in the win over Rocky Point.
