A Choice To Make

After months of reading about Nick LaLota’s campaign, and the misinformation he and his staff are spreading about how he represents Long Islanders, I find the need to speak out to my fellow East Enders. LaLota’s record is clearly one that follows every MAGA-instructed position on abortion, taxes, immigration, the environment and gun control. Are these positions that support his constituents in Congressional District 1? Poll after poll shows that the majority of Americans, regardless of political party, want women to have the right to choose to have an abortion, within common sense time frames. MAGA and LaLota do not ... 16 Sep 2024 by Staff Writer

Simple Elegance

I’m compelled to try to tell everyone out here to, if you can, go see an art show. Hampton Bays resident Helen Giaquinto is showing her work. And it is simply the best. She is a living master artist. Her life of over eight decades includes mastery in art in advertising design (Madison Avenue), illustration (national publications), and what we love here the most: her fine art paintings that have been, for decades, shown at the Southampton Artists Association and other shows. This is a chance to see her in a solo show — all her art. It’s at The ... by Staff Writer

Bang for Bucks

I write as a trustee of the Village of North Haven to urge the Southampton Town Board to support the Community Preservation Fund’s proposed acquisition of the 1.8-acre parcel at 3 North Haven Way, which I understand will be on the agenda at the Town Board meeting. This is just a small parcel as CPF acquisitions go — a single building lot in a developed subdivision — but the benefits of its preservation are vastly multiplied by its proximity to a close network of existing CPF and village-owned preserves. It is also a highly visible property, bordering Sunset Beach Road, ... by Staff Writer

The Greatest Threat

I applaud your editorial of September 5, “Keeping Whales Safe,” for showing that there is no evidence to support the idea that wind farms harm whales. In fact, the evidence is that ship strikes have been responsible for most of the deaths of humpback whales, for example. As you note, the real threat to whales and the ecosystem they depend upon is climate change. We urgently need to mitigate global warming by replacing the fossil fuels that are driving it. Governor Kathy Hochul has been disappointing in her climate leadership lately, letting important climate legislation languish, like the NY HEAT ... by Staff Writer

Hypocritical Action

I have been a resident of Bridgehampton for almost 40 years, and I am deeply concerned at the unfairness and lack of neighborliness reflected in the July 17 decision by the Sagaponack Village Board to limit access to Gibson Lane Beach to village residents [“Gibson Beach Will Become a Sagaponack Village Beach, Instead of Being in Control of Southampton Town,” 27east.com, September 4]. It is not clear whether Southampton Town residents — residents with a Southampton Town beach permit only — will be able to use the beach at all. If they are, they will be required to purchase a ... by Staff Writer

Marked by Grace

Last week’s court appearance by Justin Timberlake was somewhat drowned in the press coverage hysteria; nevertheless, it should be noted that the proceeding itself was marked by grace. All sides handled themselves with restraint and respect for our judicial system. The prosecutor, judge and defendant acted with professionalism and courtesy. The outcome was fair, and actually meaningful, given Mr. Timberlake’s wide audience. Nice to see how this played out in Sag Harbor’s courtroom. Bob Plumb Trustee Sag Harbor by Staff Writer

Big Parking Lot

I read with interest that the Sag Harbor Village Board is looking into public access points to the water being lost in Redwood, and that two other access points on John Street and Green Street will be protected. I think it is a little late for Green Street. For over a year, access to the property of people who live there has been just about impossible to achieve. Vehicles from ongoing construction on a property on the end of the street have blocked mail delivery and garbage pickup. Visits to people who live there (a relative of mine, for one) ... by Staff Writer

Insulting Statement

I have become inured to the insults that reader Ed Surgan peppers his Letters to the Editor with and have refrained from responding for some time. But a statement in his latest missive must be challenged. Speaking of the vice president, he says, “She does have the indispensable attributes of color and gender that indisputably qualify her for the leadership of the free world” [“Campaign Commercial,” Letters, September 12]. What an appalling statement. It is an insult to any woman, and especially any nonwhite woman. For, according to Mr. Surgan, women, and especially Black women, no matter how brilliant or ... by Staff Writer
