They didn’t need to win the overall race at the division championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on Thursday, October 28, but it’s become a bit of a habit for Westhampton Beach trio Gavin Ehlers, Max Haynia and Trevor Hayes.
To be clear, the Hurricanes were not overall champions last week. Northport held that distinction, with 97 points to the 115 that the ’Canes accrued, but Ehlers (16:24.9) and Haynia (16:28.3 ) finished one-two as they have done in nearly every race they have competed in this season. Add Hayes (16:48) to the mix and the ’Canes went an impressive one, two, four in what was overall a good day for the Westhampton Beach boys cross country team.
Oh, and they did accomplish their main goal, which was to win the Division III Championship, which they did with ease, finishing with 34 points, 31 points ahead of second place East Hampton.
“I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t think I can win every race, but I’m not scared to try,” Ehlers said. “That’s the mentality. I think Max is starting to get that mentality now, too. I think working together is a good thing to do. It’s fun.”
Westhampton Beach boys head coach Jack Ryan said the team may not have beaten Northport, which it really wanted to do, but some of that was taken out of their own hands. The meet was pushed back two days due to the nor’easter that came through the area on October 26, and one of the ’Canes top runners, David Alvarado, had to take an SAT the day of the race. He eventually made it to run in the individual qualifier, which he won in 18:31.40.
Cole Cammarata (10th/18:28.1) and Sean Ryan (20th/19:26.4) each ran to personal bests. Jack Cassidy finished 28th in 20:10.3.
The Westhampton Beach boys are poised to win another Suffolk County Class B title at the state qualifier this Friday, November 5, back at Sunken Meadow which would earn the team a trip back to the state meet.
The Westhampton Beach girls cross country team had a legitimate shot at winning its Division III Championship race, but when one of its top runners, Keira Falvey, was forced to miss it due to an injury, that kind of put it behind the eight-ball. The girls placed second with 56 points behind Sayville’s 29.
Oona Murphy took the top placement for the ’Canes, finishing eighth in 21:11.8. Teammate Rose Hayes finished right behind her in ninth at 21:18.6. Gabby Wendel placed 13th in 23:25.1 and Jamie Kelly finished 20th in 23:51.8. Miriam Neubauer (27:29.8), Valarie Finke (30:29.5) and Madison Phillips (30:43.6) finished 31st, 32nd and 33rd, respectively.
