The carnival is coming to town!

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Westhampton will hold its annual carnival this Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 13 to 16, at Gabreski Airport, in the field next to Old Riverhead Road. Carnival hours are 5 to 11 p.m. each night, and there will be a special fireworks show at 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 15.

Tonight, August 13, is “Carload Night.” The entry fee will be $30 per car, or $40 per van, and wristbands will be given out that are good for an unlimited number of rides.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, bracelets can be purchased for $25 each that will be good for an unlimited number of rides. The price is the same for adults and children. Ride tickets will also be available for $1 each, though different rides will require a different number of tickets.

There are a bunch of $3 coupons available, and they can be found at Flowers by Rori on Midland Avenue in Quogue, Lynne’s Cards and Gifts on Main Street in Westhampton Beach, and the Hentschel Agency on Montauk Highway in Westhampton. There’s a limit of one coupon per person, and they can be redeemed on Friday and Sunday.

This is an important fund-raiser for our Kiwanis Club members. Come on out and show your support!

Elsie Collins, the chairwoman of the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce’s Mary O. Fritchie Outdoor Juried Art Show, would like to congratulate all of the winners of this year’s contest. She would also like to recognize Dick Stanley for winning Best in Show.

Martin Stein took first place in the graphics division, while Flo Kemp finished second. In the watercolor category, Mary Ann Neilson took first, Mary Jane Stevens finished second, and John Davis took third. There was no first-place winner in the acrylics category, though Mary Jane Zeiyts took second and Joanne Maroldo finished third.

In the photography division, John Deng took top honors and was followed by M. Callotta in second and J. Spector in third. C. Burr took first-place honors in pastels, while H. Weintrub claimed second. In oils, Eugene Quinn finished first, Stephen Brehm took second, and Michael Patterson finished third.

Dick Shanley was the top finisher in the sculpture division, while L. McCullen took second, and Matthew D’Bernardo finished third. And in the mixed media category, Raymond Mannei took first place, and Lillian Llonmarn finished third. There was no second-place award given out in that division.

Great job, everyone.

Continuing on the theme of local artists, Family Counseling Services in Westhampton Beach will once again present “The Artist Studio Tour” on Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Additionally, an opening reception will be held on Friday, August 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The self-guided tour includes 18 private studios and galleries, and the works of 37 East End artists will be on display. Tickets are $35 each. For more information, visit familycounselingsvc.org, or call 288-1954, extension 241.

And there is still time to view the Westhampton Beach Historical Society’s newest exhibit, “Historical Sites from the Artist’s Perspective.” The exhibit features the works of local artist and postal carrier Liz Duerschmidt and will be on display through September 5 in the Historical Society building on Mill Road in Westhampton Beach. Gallery hours are 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, and 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Call 288-1139 for more information.

Local author Margaret Johnson will be signing copies of her newest book, “Tea and Crumpets,” on Saturday, August 15, at 5 p.m., at The Open Book on Main Street in the village. Refreshments, including treats from her new book, will be on the menu. For more information, call 288-2120.

Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day at the Westhampton Free Library! All library cardholders between the ages of 5 and 15 who check out an item that day will be able to pick up a free comic book (while they last). Additionally, they can enter a raffle and possibly win a Transformers action figure.

Surf’s up, dudes and dudettes! The iMatter Surf Camp for Children with Autism will be held this Saturday, August 15, at Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton. The event begins at 11 a.m., and each year n estimated 350 people attend. The surf camp is hosted by Community Options Inc., a national nonprofit organization that supports those with disabilities. Stop on by and check out the surf (and surfers)!

Peter Miedema of Westhampton Beach recently earned his Master of Science degree in education from the College of Saint Rose in Albany. Great job, Peter!

The next Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce dinner meeting will be held at Micole’s on Montauk Highway in Westhampton Beach on Wednesday, August 19, at 6:30 p.m. Paul Arfin, president and CEO of Intergenerational Strategies, which promotes the civic engagement of people of all ages, will be the guest speaker. Networking begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a sitdown dinner at 7:30 p.m. The fee is $30 per person, and that includes a three-course dinner, tax and tip. There will be a cash bar. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 288-3337.

Now, this event sounds like it will be a lot of laughs: “A Long Island Comedy Festival,” which will feature a number of different comedians, will be held today, August 13, at 8:30 p.m., at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25 or $45 each and can be purchased at the PAC box office on Main Street, online at whbpac.org, or by calling 288-1500. The box office is open seven days a week, from noon until 8 p.m., and later on show nights.

This next item falls under the “it is never too early to start planning a party” category:

The organizers behind the Peconic Bay Medical Center’s fifth annual “Benefit in Black & White,” a fund-raiser that benefits the Riverhead hospital’s emergency department, held a kickoff party last month in Remsenburg. Call it the warm-up party for the main party, which will be held on Friday, September 25, at the Westhampton Country Club in Westhampton Beach.

The party starts at 6:30 p.m., and the evening will include gourmet dining, dancing to music provided by East End DJs and a silent auction. The “Benefit in Black & White” raffle offers 25 chances to win a daily cash prize of $200 or the $10,000 grand prize. Daily drawings will take place from September 1 through 24, with the grand prize drawing being held on the night of the benefit.

Tickets for the “Benefit in Black & White” are $225 each, and the raffle chances cost $50 per ticket or three for $100. Both are available by calling the Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation at 548-6080. Raffle tickets may also be purchased in the Bay Shop, the hospital’s gift shop.

Do you think you have what it takes to be a teacher? If so, check out the Westhampton Beach School District’s Adult Continuing Education and Recreation Program. Organizers are looking for qualified instructors for the fall semester. If you have a special talent that you would like to share, then email Maria at tracym@whbschools.org, and she will send you an instructor information packet.
