According to ny.milesplit.com, which tracks the rankings and scores for each cross country team in the state, the Westhampton Beach girls cross country team is ranked fourth overall among fellow Class B teams in the state. The problem is that another Suffolk County Class B school is ranked just ahead of them — Sayville.

The Westhampton Beach girls placed second to Sayville, 123-181, in the Division III Championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on October 24. To Sayville’s credit, it finished the fastest out of all teams in the county last week, the ’Canes finished third.

Lily Strebel, a junior, led the girls by placing second in Division III, crossing the finish line in 19:08.70. Eighth-grader Fina DiBiaso finished eighth overall in 20:37.50, while senior Oona Murphy finished ninth in 20:50. Sophomore Caeden Dorn was next in for Westhampton Beach, finishing 11th in the division in 21:37.80, and senior Sophia DePierro finished 17th in 22:38.21 to round out the top five.

The girls will get another crack at topping Sayville at the Section XI Championships, also known as the state qualifier, this Friday, November 3, back at Sunken Meadow.

By tying with East Hampton for second place in League V with identical 4-2 records, the Westhampton Beach boys were able to run in the Division III Championship race. Trevor Hayes, a senior, placed third in the division, sixth in the county, in 16:53.60. Marcus Haynia, a junior, finished 14th in the division in 18:17.60, sophomore John Reilly finished 17th in 18:47.60, junior Ezekiel McCrary finished 20th in 19:06.50 and senior Sean Ryan finished 25th in 19:18.80.
