The Westhampton Beach boys indoor track team had four of its student-athletes reach the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships this past winter and therefore lead the list of postseason honorees.
Gavin Ehlers placed fourth in the 1,000-meter race and fifth in the 3,200-meter race at states to earn All-Federation and All-State honors in both races. He was county champion in the 3,200 and All-County in the 1,000. Colby Mason placed fourth in the pole vault to also finish All Federation and All-State. He was also All-County. Max Haynia was All-County in the 3,200 and qualified for states in the race where he finished 13th. Trevor Hayes was All-County in the 1,600-meter race and finished 21st in the state in that race.
The Westhampton Beach girls track were league champions this past winter. Rose Hayes and Oona Murphy were All-County. Keira Falvey, Jamie Kelly, Gabby Wendel were each All-League.
It was a tough season for the Westhampton Beach boys and girls basketball teams, given the fact that both programs just missed out on the playoffs, with both teams ending up just a win away from advancing.
The girls (5-7 in League IV, 10-10 overall) were led by Olivia Rongo all season long, and she has the accolades to prove it. She was named All-Conference and All-league and was also All-County Academic. Lily Berchin was named the team’s Unsung Hero.
Nick Waszkelewicz was named All-League while playing for the Hurricane boys basketball team (5-7 in League IV, 7-9 overall).
Dom Jurgel (170 pounds) was the Westhampton Beach wrestling team’s lone League V Champion this past winter. Randy Cabrera (138), Connor Gormley (145) and Aidan McKeon (160) were all league finalists, while Luke Citarelli (126), Sal Fracapane (152) and Mike Hempfling (215) each placed fourth to earn All-League honors. All six wrestlers advanced to the Suffolk County Division I Championships.
Boys and girls winter track, girls basketball, girls competitive cheer and wrestling all earned Scholar-Athlete Team honors. To earn the recognition, 75 percent of each team was required to hold a GPA above 90.
Kazmin Pensa-Johnson was named All-Conference and All-League for the Baymen boys basketball team this past winter. Stephen Sutton earned Academic All-County honors. Kaitlyn Mounts was the girls basketball team’s All-League selection, while Haley Castaldo was named the team’s Unsung Hero.
Timothy Kraycar earned All-County honors while competing in the shot put for the Baymen. Cooper Shay finished fourth at 215 pounds at the Suffolk County Division II Championships to earn himself All-County honors.
Competitive cheer, girls basketball and boys and girls indoor track teams earned Scholar-Athlete Team honors, with 75 percent of those teams holding a GPA above 90. Boys and girls basketball and wrestling were named Sportsmanship teams.
