With the March 18 special election loss in Southampton, following the disappointing defeat of John Avlon in the 2024 congressional race, and the 2023 lackluster Democratic performance across Suffolk County — both in the legislature and the executive’s office — it’s time for Democrats to take a hard look at the state of their bench.
One name stands out: Jesse Warren.
Love him or hate him, Warren is a two-term former Southampton Village mayor who is still only 42 years old. He’s built a reputation for standing up for what he believes in and fighting for what’s right, especially when it comes to vital issues like the environment and water quality, areas where many politicians talk but few deliver.
Warren has something rare: a populist streak coupled with a record of leadership. He has never shied away from taking on the establishment, even when it came at a political cost.
That kind of conviction is exactly what many voters were hungry for nationally in November 2024. It’s what the Democratic Party is sorely lacking right now.
Some of his most criticized decisions, like rejecting the Southampton Village Board’s appointment for chief of police, have aged exceptionally well. What was once controversial now appears courageous and prudent.
Democrats need leaders willing to speak plainly, act boldly and stand firm. Warren has shown he can do just that. If the party is serious about rebuilding and winning, it’s time to look beyond tired consultants and recycled candidates — and start looking at people like Warren.
