What's Different?

Democrats, awakened from their stupor by their stunning trifecta defeat at the polls, are now processing what went so wrong and how all those “garbage” “deplorables” managed to take control. Surely we, as a nation, are descending down a spiraling path of iniquity only the liberal elites can save us from! Authoritarianism, fascism and the demise of democracy is at our doorsteps.

Eight years of liberal lawfare, judicial overreach and their propaganda machine known as the mainstream media all failed to save our nation. Pressure from the FBI on social media to censor whatever did not comply with their party’s narrative didn’t work either. Elon Musk’s X files releases when he took over Twitter and Mark Zuckerberg’s congressional hearings testimony made all that perfectly clear.

Yet Democrats feign disbelief — just more disinformation, can’t possibly be true. Only liberal elites are capable of discerning such weighty matters. Hence Joe Biden’s Orwellian proposal for a Disinformation Governance Board.

Paula Angelone, Ph.D., has it all figured out, what the next four years will be like under President Donald Trump [“The American Way,” Letters, November 14]. I have no idea what field her Ph.D. is in, but certainly it’s not history. She predicts an extreme and brutal assault on immigrants. Trump’s history of exaggerated demands as an effective and leveraged bargaining tool has escaped her. Compare illegal immigration rates before, during and after Trump’s first term, and consider what it will be after his second.

Regarding NATO, only three members met their commitments in defense spending in 2014; that tripled to nine members in 2020 after Trump threatened to leave NATO. Twenty-three of the 32 NATO members are expected to have contributed the required 2 percent for their own self-defense in 2024 instead of relying on the USA to protect them so they can take paid six weeks of vacations while the average American is lucky to get two.

Ms. Angelone predicts Trump will end the Ukraine war the “Trump way,” which will require Ukraine to concede some land and restrict them from ever being part of NATO. Of course that will be part of the solution — what else does Ukraine have to offer?

The entire war could have been avoided were it not for Biden’s willingness to sacrifice many tens of thousands of Ukraine lives to fight his proxy war against Vladimir Putin.

Russia has no natural borders to protect itself from the west without the Carpathian Mountains. Russia lost an estimated 26 million of their people in attacks from the west during World War II alone. The USA came to the brink of war with Russia when Nikita Khrushchev decided to plant missiles in Cuba, only a few miles from our southern border. How is this any different?
