Westhampton Beach Mayor Maria Moore and Trustee Brian Tymann confirmed Saturday, November 7, that Police Chief Trevor Gonce had announced his retirement.
“Chief Gonce met with me yesterday to let me know of his plans to retire,” said the mayor via email. “I have had the privilege to work with Chief Gonce for over six years and we have developed a relationship of mutual trust and respect. Chief Gonce has been a valued member of our team of public servants who dedicate themselves every day to promote the best interests of the village.”
“I know he has been thinking about it,” said Mr. Tymann. “He was really dedicated to the job, but made the difficult decision to retire and pursue other things.”
The chief had 25 years of experience as a police officer. “Chief Gonce advanced through the ranks of our department to the position of top cop,” Ms. Moore added. “He could always be counted upon to meet all challenges whether it be managing peaceful protests, storm preparedness and response, and most recently the COVID pandemic.”
Neither official said when Chief Gonce’s retirement would take effect, and he could not be reached for comment.
“Personally, I’m sad we won’t have Trevor as chief anymore,” said Mr. Tymann. “However, I’m kind of excited for him because he gets to explore other things.”
