Winifred ‘Winnie’ Fitzgerald

Winifred (Winnie) Fitzgerald of Southampton died peacefully, surrounded by family on September 4. She was 96.

Born Winifred Frances Browne on June 16, 1925, in Clifden County, Galway, Ireland. She was one of nine and was predeceased by all.

She left Ireland in 1947 with her sister Ann for a better life in America.

In 1949, she married her late husband Jack Fitzgerald and together they had five children. They resided in Flushing, and spent summers in Southampton.

In 1992, she moved to Southampton full time. She loved spending time at the shores with family and friends. She enjoyed her soap operas, making Irish soda bread, a good cup of tea, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren, her family said.

She is survived by four children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She will surely be missed, her family said.

A paramedic attempting to treat a Speonk man who was highly intoxicated suffered a broken nose after the man head-butted him last week. Southampton Town Police say that the man, Manuel Lemus, 31, was being unruly and violent when they were called to a Flanders Road bus stop on February 6.
