I am writing to offer my thanks to Councilmen Michael Iasilli and Tommy John Schiavoni for their votes against suing the Shinnecock Nation for construction on their tribal lands.
As a lifelong resident born on lands tended for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples, I feel tremendous gratitude for their wise ministering of our land, despite the efforts of many to grab their lands and eradicate their language and culture.
It is time for us to fully acknowledge who the Shinnecock are and to support them in their efforts to create a thriving nation.
Unless you change your points of view, Supervisor Maria Moore, Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara and Councilman Bill Pell, you will not be getting my vote.
Here’s to a new year that brings new perspectives we can explore to create a more joyous life for all, including the deserving Shinnecock.
