It was a comeback that couldn’t have been written any better.

Facing a 16-run deficit heading into the last inning, the Writers scored 17 runs to come back and defeat the Artists, 19-18, in the 74th annual East Hampton Artists and Writers Celebrity Softball Game at Herrick Park. It is thought to be the most runs scored in the game’s long history.

Bill Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States, once again made an appearance, and just as he did the past few years, called balls and strikes from just beyond the pitcher’s circle for a few innings.

This year’s game included regulars Leif Hope, Mike Lupica, Carl Bernstein and Ken Auletta, and international singer-songwriter Katini Yamaoka sang “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” at the start of the seventh inning.

The game raises funds for local entities including the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center, Phoenix House Academy, The Retreat and East End Hospice.
